Short answer

Replacing a consumer unit takes most of a day and costs from £550 for a standard flat. If you still have a board with rewireable fuses, no RCD protection, or a plastic enclosure, it no longer meets the current standard and is the single most worthwhile electrical upgrade in an older London property.

You need us if

  • A board with old-style rewireable fuses or ceramic fuse carriers
  • No RCD protection — no test button anywhere on the board
  • A plastic or wooden enclosure (metal has been required since 2016)
  • Breakers that trip and cut power to half the flat at once
  • No spare ways left for a new circuit, shower or EV charger
  • An EICR that coded the board C2

What's included

  • Full metal-clad consumer unit with individual RCBOs per circuit
  • SPD (surge protection) fitted as standard
  • Every existing circuit tested before and after — faults found, not hidden
  • Main earthing and bonding brought up to standard where needed
  • Circuits labelled properly so you can find the right breaker
  • Electrical Installation Certificate plus Part P building control notification

The standard we work to

Fitted to BS 7671 (18th Edition) Amendment 2, with a metal enclosure to Regulation 421.1.201 and notified to building control under Part P.

Questions

Fuse board replacement — what people ask

How much does a fuse board replacement cost?
From £550 supplied and fitted for a standard flat with up to 10 circuits, including certification and Part P notification. Larger houses with more circuits run £650 to £850. If the property has no main earth or the bonding is missing — common in unmodernised Victorian conversions — that adds £150 to £300, and we will tell you before we start, not after.
Why do I need individual RCBOs instead of two RCDs?
With the older split-load design, one fault takes out every circuit on that side of the board — so a failing fridge can kill your lights at 2am. RCBOs give each circuit its own protection, so a fault isolates to that one circuit. It costs slightly more and it is the difference between a minor annoyance and a dark flat.
Do I legally have to replace an old fuse board?
There is no law forcing an owner-occupier to replace a working board. But a rewireable fuse board with no RCD will be coded C2 on an EICR, which makes the report unsatisfactory — so if you let the property, in practice you do. And an old board offers no protection against the shock risk that RCDs exist to prevent.
How long will my power be off?
Most of the working day, typically 9am to 4pm. We can usually leave one socket circuit live on a temporary feed if you need a fridge or a router running, so ask when you book. We always test every circuit before disconnecting, so if something was already faulty we find it then rather than being blamed for it afterwards.
What if you find faults on my existing circuits?
It happens on maybe one job in three in older housing stock, because the new RCBOs are far more sensitive than what they replace — a circuit with damp or damaged cable that limped along under an old fuse will trip immediately. We test everything before we start so you know up front. We will never fit a new board and leave a circuit disconnected without telling you.
